COMMUNICATION The Latin root of ‘communication’ – communicare – means ‘to share’ or ‘to be in relation with’ and is related to the words ‘common’, ‘commune’ and ‘community’, suggesting an act of ‘bringing together’. The notion of communication has been present and debated in the West from pre-Socratic times. Hippocrates and his followers, for example, produced a corpus of symptoms, ‘bringing together’ the signs of a disease or ailment with the disease itself for the purposes of diagnosis and prognosis. In contemporary semiotics, however, it is considered that a fundamental form of communication is to be found in the semioses that occur between cells (see semiotic self).
